…oh, and happy May! May might just be my favourite month… the weather starts to warm up, buds emerge on the trees, and the apple blossoms and lilacs bloom.
All things to be happy about.
The past couple of weeks I’ve been working on getting my front porch spruced up. I was cleaning out our work room when I discovered an old calendar frame I bought a few years back – I decided it would make a perfect outdoor chalkboard for upbeat quotes and messages for my porch!
And oh – PLEASE excuse my awful handwriting! (Common among us artist types!) ;)
Here’s how you can make your own!
You will need:
A calendar frame
Paint colour of your choice
Glue or a staple gun
Remove the back of the chalkboard calendar and set the two pieces apart on a surface you can paint on (My back deck needs it’s yearly coat of paint, so I didn’t mind if any paint spilled)
Paint your frame the colour of your choice with one of your paintbrushes. Add as many coats as you’d like while drying in-between. For a vintage touch, use a sanding block to rough up the edges and corners.
Use your other paint brush for the chalkboard paint. Since chalkboard paint is generally very thick and oil based, I suggest using a cheap paintbrush you don’t care much for.
Add a second coat if needed, allowing time for the paint to dry.
When both pieces are painted and have dried completely, assemble your calendar frame back together with a staple gun or with strong glue.
And that’s it – You’re finished! This project is beyond easy, and can be completed in just a few short hours. You can lean yours like I did, or add some rope or wire to the back to hang inside or out as you please.
I hope this post inspires you to create your own outdoor chalkboard!
Have a beautiful day!
