Selecting the Right Dining Chairs for your Home

Disclaimer: This is an article on selecting the right dining chairs that I originally wrote for Wicker Emporium, that I thought I would share with you all on my own Blog.

Choosing The Right Dining Chairs

Are you in the market for dining chairs? Be sure to read this post beforehand so you are better equipped to make the right purchase that will last you for years to come. 🙂

Recently I had a discussion with a close friend of mine regarding dining chairs and what would be best for her home. I thought it would be a great idea to share what we discussed, and the pros and cons of different chairs based on your lifestyle and home!

It goes without saying that solid chairs with minimal fabric would be ideal for a home with young children and pets, who, let’s be honest here, can sometimes get a little messy! But that doesn’t mean you have to forego style in exchange for your loved ones! There’s plenty of lovely options.

Bonded or tufted leather (real or faux) is a great way to add sophistication to a table while still maintaining durability with kids, but may not be ideal for some of our furry friends who may claw at upholstery. They are easy to clean so you don’t have to worry about spills during speghetti night! Win – win!

Metal, wood, or solid material chairs have been a go-to for years. A well made solid chair can easily last a lifetime and be passed down to family. For the minimalist, café or Scandinavian style chairs are a stylish option without creating a lot of visual clutter. Depending on your décor and design of your space, a traditional, Windsor, or ladder back chair can be ideal for a more formal – or casual – style and are easily adaptable to different spaces.

If upholstered chairs are a personal favourite of yours, consider how often the space will be used. Do you have an eat-in breakfast area as well as a dining room? Scotchgaurd can be a chair-lifesaver when it comes to inevitable spills and messes. If you plan to eat in these chairs regularly, you may also want to consider a medium to darker shade to help conceal potential stains, or another option – slipcovers!

Don’t be afraid to mix and match with the style of your table! Cafe chairs with a intricate dining table can create a beautiful eclectic set, as well as simple tables with formal chairs can add interest to an otherwise simple and streamlined table.

Choosing The Right Dining Chairs

Last year I added new chairs to my farmhouse table. Almost any chair could have worked with this table, but I wanted to add a bit of an elegant touch to my space while keeping the look inviting. I do have three dogs, but with Scotchguard and the vacuum on my side (As well as the neutral grey-tone fabric) I think these chairs were the perfect choice for our family.

Have you chosen your perfect dining chairs, yet? Be sure to check out this post on my new chairs if you are interested in learning more about them!

Enjoy your weekend!

  1. LOVE! and I LOVE the light fixture as well! I found you on Remodelaholic’s link up! I am on there as well under #40!

  2. I love your chair! I need chairs with no fabric, though, as the cats do (sometimes, who am I kidding? often) jump on them. But I was thinking about adding a tufted cushion on them when I have guests… It won’t be as pretty as yours, though.

    • That’s a great solution! I find now more than ever they have cute structured looking seat cushions you can tie on… and even temporary slipcovers! I bet whatever you do will look gorgeous. 🙂

  3. Such a great post…you make people think about function as well as beauty. I too am on the hunt for 2 perfect chairs. My 2 existing ones match and function….but they’re so darn heavy, people tend to drag them out instead of being able to pick them up.

Love your chandy BTW and your chairs!….

    • Hi Christine! Thank you so much. 🙂
Do you have leg protectors/padding underneath of your chairs? I find most people drag out chairs anyway, so if it’s softer underneath it may help for a smoother transition when people sit down. 🙂

  4. I love those chairs with your farmhouse table…not only does it add some elegance to the table but it also adds great texture and softness too…My dining room table used to have all wood chairs and I switched the 4 side chairs to upholstered chairs by Pottery Barn…it truly made such a great difference in the look…softened it tremendously and looked more updated too!…Great examples!!

  5. Love this post – I am in the process of finding chairs right now for my new dining space! xoxo

  6. LOVE your light fixture and your chairs! I think the tufting on those chairs is perfect with the table! You go girl!

    Happy day to you!

  8. Great examples. Love your table and chairs, they look so nice together…the lighting too! I recently purchased parsons chairs to go with my glass top table and once the renovation is complete they will make it to their new spot in the kitchen. Thanks so much for sharing at AMAZE ME MONDAY…
    Blessings,
    Cindy

    • Thank you Cindy! 🙂 When your renovation is finished you’ll have to do a reveal so I can check it out. 🙂
      Have a great day,

  12. I just got new dining chairs for our everyday set. I chose a combo of wood and fabric. You have some good thoughts on the chairs. I also considered how easy the chair is to move as some of them can get pretty heavy. I do like the chairs you chose- excellent mix with the table!

  13. I am in love with your house. I’m very glad I stumbled across your blog today. I will now be following you!

    • Thank you Amber! We made it from plans from ana-white.com – also, in the ‘Projects’ section we also have a tutorial on how we ended up with the antique finish we have now. 🙂

    Hello,

This is great! I am in love with these chairs and looking for them specifically. Can I ask where they were purchased? The chairs that are featured with the farm house table.

    • There’s a link toward the end of the post all about the chairs themselves, you can find lots of info there! 🙂 Thank you Claudia!

  17. Hi- I love this room!! Gorgeous! Can you please tell me where you got your chandelier?
