Nate Berkus Rug

Happy New Year!

Have you taken down your Christmas decorations yet?

I started yesterday and am nearly done. Christmas is my favourite time of year for many reasons, one of those being the beautiful decor… so it’s sad to see them put away into boxes – but I love the freshness the New Year brings. For me, I always get a kick of motivation to complete projects in the house or putter decorating with items I have. I’m working on a ‘Winter’ mantel which I hope to share with you all later this week.

A couple of days after Christmas I went out shopping to check out a rug I had been eyeing. We had a rug previously, but it was poorly made and basically un-wove itself over time. I was considering purchasing the TÅRNBY from Ikea online.

Or this Nate Berkus Braided Jute rug from Target.

We don’t have an Ikea where I live, but we do have a Target which I was able to check out. I wasn’t completely certain the 5×7 Nate Berkus rug was as large as I wanted, but when I walked into the aisle I noticed it was marked down from $129.99 to $64.99.

I don’t believe I’ve ever found a jute rug that inexpensive! For that price, I decided to give it a chance, and if I wanted something larger I could pick up another rug to create a 5×10. I was fine with this plan because I preferred the look of this rug to the Ikea one. I took the plunge and made the purchase!

When I arrived home I immediately laid out the rug – Patient, right? It was larger than the one we had before by about a foot on each side, and covered the space in-between my couch and the chairs I have flanked by the fireplace. I wasn’t sure If I wanted the rug to slightly tuck under the couch and cover the space under the two chairs or stick with the one rug. In fact, I’m still not sure. A larger rug would make the space look more grand, while the one we have fits perfectly helps ground the furniture around the coffee table.

What do you think?

I have to say I LOVE the texture and the way it finishes off the room, as well as the way it helps to ground the living area from the dining room. When we first moved in, this was just the living room with no dining room in the house… It seemed like a dauntingly large room, and I could have created a few sitting areas as well as added a large bookcase – but I was dying to have a farmhouse table. It’s definitely a cozy space, but it works for us. We were able to comfortably seat eight people during “Friendsgiving” (Thanksgiving with friends) and were happy to say the day was a success.

You may have noticed I didn’t show much of the room in these photos. Stay tuned to see how the Winter mantel turned out. 😉

Do you have a rug that you absolutely love that you scored for a great deal? Let me know! I love a good rug!

Wishing you all of the happiness in the New Year,

B

I had the same problem recently when I changed out my lounge furniture for bigger, more comfier sofas. In the end I decided it wasn’t a good ‘fit’ size-wise, so I’m still on the look out for the perfect jute rug. Hoo-ever, I loved the one I’d bought and didn’t want to keep it covered and hidden away for some ‘distant possibility’. I ended up putting it under the dining room table, and it looks fantastic! I’ve had so much positive feedback from friends and rellies, so I’m heaps pleased I went with my gut. Give it a try if you’re still not 100% happy with the layout. Happy New Year from Oz. Cheers, heather x

    • I’m happy with the look, just not sure if it should be larger or keep the current size. Under a dining table would be a great alternative but it wouldn’t be large enough for our farmhouse table… I was considering doing that if buying two rugs didn’t work out until I realized it wasn’t large enough. Great tip though!

What if you centered your couch more fully along the rug? At the moment you have it positioned right up against the far end, and have a large empty space on the near side. I think it would give more balance to the room. You’ve positioned the chair opposite on the near side corner and it’s anchored that side of the rug. It’s a great rug and I love how well it goes with the overall effect you’ve created in this room. heather x

        • Hi There!

In this post I didn’t reveal my Winter mantel (Which is now up on the blog) So you can’t see the mantel here… everything needs to be centred along with our mantel including the sofa and coffee table or the room becomes off-balance. The rug cannot be centered with the sofa fully because of the pellet stove in the way. In person when you see the mantel with everything it all appears balanced. 🙂 Even so, if the sofa was moved over there wouldn’t be traffic flow to our dining area… based on this post however I can see why this would seem odd. 😉

Hey Brandi….I totally get it now that I’ve seen your gorgeous Winter mantel! I love this room. It makes me what to dive right in and never leave! Total awesomeness. Hx <3

          • Thank you so much for such a nice compliment, you are too sweet!! Centering things within this room can be a headache sometimes, especially since all of the walls slant in different directions – that’s old houses for ya! 😉

            Have an amazing Sunday!

  2. I love this rug in your space. And for such a great deal, how can you pass that up? I have the TARNBY rug from IKEA and absolutely love it. It has held up so well in our high traffic kitchen/dining room, I would totally recommend it, and I think I only paid $99 for it. Happy New Year !

  3. That rug looks great! We need a rug for our living room but I just can’t find one I think will look good. That’s a great deal. I’m gonna keep my eye out at Target for rugs on clearance now, they can be so expensive!

    • Thank you Emily. 🙂 They sure can be expensive… and such with such a big purchase you want to know you are getting something that is going to last! I was so disappointed when the one we had prior to this unwove itself.

  4. First your living room is beautiful. I love the clean and simple design. Second I am so jealous you found that rug for so cheap! I’m going to have to start browsing through the Target rug aisle when I go there now to keep a lookout for some great rug deals!

    • Thank you so much Victoria! Definitely keep an eye out for sales – who knows, this sale may still be on! I hid our focal wall with our mantel in this post because I’m doing a ‘Winter Mantel’ later this week – you’ll have to swing by! 🙂

  5. I love your room! It’s so cozy and fresh. I’m so glad you found such a good deal at Target!

  6. I love the look of this rug–but what if you moved the couch so it is more centered on the rug and just put the legs on to the rug. You could move the chair angle to fit either on or off the rug. I think this might help to balance out the area and make the rug look more of a perfect fit. This rug has such a nice texture and color and goes well with your furniture…
