DIY Burlap Bulletin Board Makeover

DIY Burlap Bulletin Board Makeover!

Friday is almost here again! Woo-hoo!

Our bathroom renovation I’ve been telling you about has been at a bit of a stop… The saw at Home Depot broke so we have to wait on that to finish planking the wall. Bummer.

In the meantime, I thought I would show you how I made over my existing bulletin board from my childhood into a DIY burlap bulletin board makeover I love! This was inspired by the gorgeous bulletin boards I’ve been seeing at HomeSense – It looked so easy to recreate… and it was!

For this project you will need:

Burlap
A bulletin board (There are HEAPS of these at second-hand stores for next to nothing!)
Nailhead Pins/Trim (Found at a fabric store, just ask someone working where to find them.)
Staple gun
Screws & Drill (Optional, this is just to tie the hanging twine on)
Twine or picture hanging wire

Step 1)
Lay out your burlap on a flat surface and place your bulletin board on top of the fabric. This is going to help you determine how much fabric you need – as a precaution, I cut about 4-5 inches around the bulletin board. Better be safe than sorry!

Step 2)
If your burlap is a little wrinkly, you may want to lightly iron the fabric. I liked the look of creasing, so I skipped this step.

Step 3)

With your fabric laid out flat on your floor or a flat surface, place your bulletin board face-down onto your fabric. You are then going to want to start pulling the fabric on one of your four sides over the back tightly, and stapling into place. Continue on each four sides making sure your corners are tight. If you need to pull tighter, just remove a couple of staples to fix it. πŸ™‚

Step 4)

Using your nailhead pins, decide how far in your want your ‘studs’.. Using a long ruler stick is helpful for that part of this project, and also to help you evenly space our your studs. Start placing your studs into the bulletin board.

Tip: Count how many studs you used on one side so you can use the same amount on the opposite side. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but this gives you a general idea of how spaced out your studs should be and how many you need.

Step 5)
Drill two screws into the wood of your bulletin board to hang your picture hanging wire or twine. This step is optional – there are many ways you can hang your bulletin board, but this is just how I went about it. πŸ™‚

Step 7)
Tie your twine securely to hang. I hung it from two even nails on the wall so it wouldn’t tilt.

That’s it! You’re finished? HOW easy was this project? It brought new life to my bulletin board. I love it!

I know.. it’s still pretty bare! I plan to use it as an inspiration board.

But for now, it just holds a photo of my fiancΓ© and I as well as some paint swatches. πŸ˜‰

  11. Brandi, I’m going to spirit my husband’s old model building bulletin board away from him (hehehe) and redo it in unbleached muslin, of which I have plenty and I already have the nailhead pins or as we call them back home, upholstery tacks. Thank you for an idea for a project that costs me NOTHING! Yay! Love it!
